meeting 1st october

Our October meeting is just a week away and we are pleased to have two presenters this month.
Neil Hamir of Amara Farm will give a short refresher on garlic production.
Mike Miard, Manager of Van Isle Water Services will give a presentation on rainwater harvesting systems.  He will focus on the technology and design of rainwater harvesting systems for vegetable garden and landscape irrigation; including  pumps,  tanks, filters, and micro drip systems.  It takes time to plan and install a rainwater harvesting system, attending this informative meeting will have you motivated to start now and be ready for spring.
Remember how the winter of 2014/15 produced the record low snowpack in the mountains surrounding the Comox Valley followed by record dry spring and summer seasons. As a result, Stage 3 water restrictions were in effect from July 3 to September 18. Environment Canada forecasts predict that the winter of 2015/16 will be another warm one, resulting in low snow pack and another gardening season with water restrictions.

Rainwater harvesting is the collection and storage of rainwater for potable and nonpotable uses, including watering your garden, outdoor cleaning, and even drinking water. Harvesting rainwater instead of using groundwater or municipal water reduces pressure on aquifers and sensitive river ecosystems.
