Jay Miles-Baker: Young Farmer Panel – Rotary B – Saturday – 12:30-1:30 pm
Bio: My name is Jay Baker-French. I’ve been a life-long lover of growing food, starting out in my neighbour’s vegetable garden and my parents’ compost pile at a very young age. When I got to university, it took me a while to realize that I could, in fact, study what I loved. After a year of Arts I switched to Applied Biology/Agroecology at UBC (BSc 2013), focusing on soil science and localization of food systems.
After graduating, I, along with three friends in similar programs, jumped at an opportunity to connect with landowners in the Comox Valley who were looking to have their properties farmed. So we moved over in spring of 2013 and started The Birds and the Beans.
Our vision is to produce a diversity of foods (vegetables, staples, and meats) that both can make up a largely local diet and can work together ecologically on the farm.
